Very true. "Classical" liberalism is what is now referred to as
"libertarianism." "Modern" liberalism is synonymous with "modern"
leftism.
Communism is often considered to be leftist, but only theoretical
communism fits this description. True communism is classless: no
state with the people ruling themselves directly. What most people
think is communism is actually socialism, which is really fascism,
since it requires an all-powerful state to control the people.
Socialism is fascist and has only two classes, the ruling elite and
the proles. Fascism claims to rule in the interests of the people,
but in reality is only concerned with perpetuating its own power.
This is why fascist movements frequently invoke populism in their
propaganda, referring to themselves as "people's movements,"
"democratic revolutions," etc.
Perhaps the key defining aspect of a fascist movement is the way it
portrays itself as a "revolutionary" movement. Conservatism wishes to
maintain the status quo, while fascism wishes to reorganize society in
a utopian mold.
Classical liberalism aka libertarianism recognizes the right of the
individual to define his own life. This is the exact opposite of
fascism aka socialism, which advocates absolute control by the state
over the individual. Modern leftists are statists, meaning they are
fascists, and not the communists they pretend to be. True communism
is almost ideologically identical to anarchism, the exact opposite of
socialism.
